When the headlines come one after another, it can feel as though there is hardly time to catch our breath.
Rachel, Isaias, and Simon have brought renewed attention to the dangers of powerful storms. Isaias left hundreds of thousands of customers without electricity in Florida and Alabama, while communities faced flooding, fallen trees, and damaged roads. These are families wondering when the lights will come back on, whether their food will keep, and how they will meet their everyday needs. Associated Press reporting
Storm surge and coastal erosion can threaten homes and roads. Inland flooding can interrupt transportation and water service. Earthquakes bring their own sudden dangers, reminding us how quickly the infrastructure we depend on can be disrupted.
Then there are the pressures that build more slowly: grocery bills, fuel costs, economic uncertainty, and concerns about reliable energy. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization reported that global food commodity prices rose in September, with weather concerns and transportation disruptions contributing to the increase. Those commodity prices are not the same as our grocery receipts, but they show how events far away can put pressure on the food supply. FAO report
Drought can damage crops. Flooding can destroy harvests and delay planting. Disrupted transportation can make supplies harder to move. Several problems arriving together can leave families feeling overwhelmed.
It can seem as though uncertainty is accelerating. Whatever tomorrow brings, there are practical steps we can take today.
Turn concern into preparation
A thought I often return to is:
“Once the emergency has happened, the hour of preparation is over.”
The moment the power goes out is a difficult time to find backup power. When water service is interrupted, we need safe water already available. When roads close or shelves empty, having food at home gives us breathing room.
Preparation helps replace some of those anxious questions with a plan:
We have water. We have food. We have light. We know what to do next.
That confidence can quiet fear and help us make calmer decisions. It can also put us in a better position to help a neighbor, a friend, or someone in our family.
Forty years of helping families prepare
Bob and I have been helping people prepare for life’s uncertainties for 40 years. Since 1986, our purpose has been to help families find useful products, thoughtful guidance, and greater peace of mind.
Our selection continues to expand, including solar power products, water filters, grain mills, herbs, seeds, and other practical supplies.
A properly sized solar and battery system can provide backup power for selected essentials. A water filter suited to your needs can be an important part of a safe-water plan, alongside stored drinking water. A grain mill can help you make use of stored grains, and seeds can support longer-term efforts to grow food.
The right choices depend on your household, your budget, and the situations you are preparing for. We want to help you understand those choices and find what will serve you well.
Start with one useful step
You do not have to do everything at once.
Begin by looking at the basics: drinking water, food your family eats, lighting, necessary medications, communication, and a plan for a power outage or evacuation. Think about children, older family members, pets, and anyone who depends on electrically powered equipment.
Then choose one gap to address. Build steadily, use what you store, and practice your plan. Follow local emergency guidance when a threat develops.
Even a modest amount of preparation can make a difficult day more manageable.
We want to help
We cannot control the next storm, earthquake, price increase, or disruption. We can give ourselves more options before it happens.
That is the peace of mind we want for you: knowing you have taken thoughtful steps to care for the people you love.
If you are unsure where to begin, please reach out. Tell us what concerns you, what you already have, and what your family needs. We will help you take the next practical step.
